Monday: What is a hero?In this concept lesson, students explore the definition of "hero." Students will identify characteristics of heroes, create their own hero, and define “hero” in their own words. Students will also take the pretest on this day.

Tuesday: Heroism in Greek MythologyIn this Socratic seminar, students will read three short Greek myths and discuss them in small groups and as a whole class.

Wednesday: Exploring ThemeIn this direct instruction lesson, students will learn about theme, then read "The Orphan Boy and his Elk Dog," and practice analyzing theme.

Thursday: Heroism in British MythologyStudents will learn about King Arthur, read the story of the Sword in the Stone, and discuss what makes King Arthur heroic (or not heroic).

Friday: Defining ParodyIn this multimedia inquiry lesson, students will explore the concept of parodies and create their own parody in preparation for reading "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court."

Monday: Comparing and Contrasting Source and ParodyStudents will read an excerpt from Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" and then compare Twain's characterization of King Arthur to the King Arthur presented in the legend.

Tuesday: Video Planning DayStudents will begin the culminating project for this unit: Recreating an Arthurian Legend. They are to create a video, in any style they wish, recreating the story of the Sword in the Stone. On Tuesday, the students will be planning their videos and writing their scripts.

Wednesday: Filming DayStudents will use the scripts they created on Tuesday as a guide to film their videos with their group members.

Thursday: Editing DayStudents will edit and complete their videos.
|
Friday: Presentation DayTo culminate this unit, each group will present their videos to the class. Students will take the post-test on this day.
