Exit ticket: At the end of the concept lesson, students must write their own definition of a hero on an exit ticket before leaving class. The definition must include at least three characteristics of a hero, as discussed in class. Possible definition: : “A hero is a person with extraordinary courage and/or ability who may use his or her strengths to benefit others and may or may not be on a journey of some type. A hero may be seen as a role model or honored for his or her actions.”
Graphic Organizer: After the direct instruction lesson on theme, the students must complete a graphic organizer for homework to demonstrate their understanding of the lesson.
Guided notes: Students will fill out these guided notes as they watch the presentation on King Arthur. This assignment will not be graded, but it will be used to assess students' understanding of the presentation.
Pretest and post-test: Students will take two tests in the course of this unit. The pretest consists of two open-ended questions and two multiple-choice questions and will not count for a grade. The post-test consists of four open-ended questions and will count as a major grade.
Parody Assignment: To demonstrate their understanding of what a parody is, students will be creating their own parody, either individually or in groups. This will be graded according to a simple rubric.
King Arthur Video Project: This is a major project, and there are several parts to its assessment. To assess this project, there is a complex rubric and a group/self evaluation form.
