About Me
Hello! I am Katlyn Lancaster, a teacher-in-training at University of North Carolina Wilmington. I am originally from Goldsboro, North Carolina, where I attended a remarkable high school called Wayne Early/Middle College High School. I can lend my enthusiasm for learning and respect for teachers to the people at this wonderful school, which made me into the person I am today. The teachers at WEMCHS are innovative and caring, and they strive to make content relevant and engaging for their students. I have this philosophy in common with them. English classes can be exciting and useful for students at their best, but boring, stuffy, and irrelevant at their worst. With the inspiration I take from the many extraordinary teachers I have had (throughout school and college), as well as the enthusiasm I have for learning and for English, and my deep desire to make a difference in the world, I hope that I will be half as good a teacher as the ones who have inspired and motivated me throughout my life.
On a much lighter note, my favorite authors are many and varied, and they range from "classics" such as Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, and H.G. Wells, to more modern authors like J.K. Rowling, Alice Walker, Sandra Cisneros, Sherman Alexie, Chuck Palahniuk, John Green, and Christopher Moore. I even have an appreciation for Shakespeare, although I believe that a lot of teachers do not provide their students with the necessary support to understand and appreciate his very eloquent but difficult language. As much as I can, I would love to incorporate a diversity of texts and authors in my classroom, which I hope is reflected in my curriculum plan. I am a cat enthusiast, which fits with the stereotype of book lovers like myself. Besides admiring cats and reading books, I enjoy watching anime and foreign film, as well as writing pointless but fun songs on the ukulele.
